The incident took place in the enclave of San Pedro Garza Garcia in the northern state of Nuevo Leon last night. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador wrote a statement on X addressing the disaster yesterday evening.
“I regret the accident in San Pedro Garza García, caused by a strong wind during the event attended by Jorge Álvarez Máynez, presidential candidate for Movimiento Ciudadano and other militants, leaders and candidates of that party,” he said.
“According to Samuel García, governor of Nuevo León, who is at the scene, four deaths and 15 injuries are reported. I hug family members, friends of the victims and supporters of that organization. We are attentive.”
Since he released his statement, the death toll has risen to five, and at least 50 people were injured. Presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez was one of the injured individuals who was sent to the hospital.
“After the accident in San Pedro Garza, where a gust of wind collapsed the stage where we were, I moved to the San José hospital,” he wrote on X. “I am fine and in communication with state authorities to follow up on what happened. The only important thing right now is to care for the victims of the accident.”
