Bofill died on Thursday at her daughter’s home in Vallejo, California, a representative for the performer confirmed. Her passing was announced in a post on her official Facebook page.
“On behalf of my dear friend Angie, I am saddened to announce her passing on the morning of June 13th.”
Her manager Rich Engel wrote a follow-up post: “Just to clear up the confusion. On behalf of Shauna Bofill, husband Chris Portuguese, we are saddened but must report that the passing of Angela yesterday is indeed true. We thank Melba Moore and Maysa for their early condolences. Thanks for your many posts.”
A New York native of Cuban-Puerto Rican descent, Bofill began her professional singing career as a teenager in the early 1970s. Influenced by Latin music and inspired by Black performers, she pursued her passion. Bofill attended the Manhattan School of Music, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1976.
Her debut album, Angie, released in 1978, featured the chart-topping single “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter” and the jazz composition “Under the Moon and Over the Sky.” Less than a year later, she followed up with a second album, Angel of the Night, which included hits like “What I Wouldn’t Do (For the Love of You)” and “I Try.” She was among the pioneering Latina singers to achieve success in the R&B and jazz markets.
Throughout her career, Bofill released 10 studio albums and lent her backing vocals to albums by artists such as Diana Ross and Kirk Whalum. Last year, she was honored with induction into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame.
