Despite receiving widespread support, Carrie Underwood’s performance at President Trump’s inauguration seemed to upset some American Idol producers. A source close to the new American Idol judge revealed to the U.S. Sun that the “attention” her performance of “America the Beautiful” is “not at all” what the show’s executives wanted heading into the new season.

“The show just wants to stay away from anything political,” the insider explained. “So this turning into such a big, worldwide topic of conversation is not what [the producers] wanted heading into the start of the season. “
The source further pointed out that the situation has become “too big and out of anyone’s control.” This is leading to a stressful position for American Idol executives “In terms of the amount of attention it’s gotten and Idol being brought into the political conversation.”
However, the insider said the American Idol crew is proud of Underwood for how she handled herself during the performance. This is despite the performance suffering some technical difficulties.
Carrie Underwood spoke about performing at the inauguration days before the historical event.
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” she said. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Underwood has not publicly commented on the outcome of her inauguration performance and has instead chosen to celebrate the premiere of her new Hulu concert special, Reflection.
There Are “Concerns” That American Idol Contestants May Feel “Uncomfortable” Following Carrie Underwood’s Inauguration Performance
Meanwhile, a source told the Daily Mail that American Idol executives are concerned that some of the new season’s contestants may feel “uncomfortable” after Carrie Underwood’s performance at President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
“Idol contestants come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds,” the source explained. “And so do the people who work on the show. There are concerns that her apparent political stance might make some contestants feel uncomfortable.”
“There’s also worry that backlash could impact viewership,” the insider continued. “Her apparent support for Trump doesn’t align with the show’s values of inclusivity and diversity.”
The source also said that the inauguration performance may cause issues within the judge’s panel.
“Lionel Richie, who is very liberal, may not see eye to eye with Carrie’s views,” they said. “Which could create some tension. He has never and will never support Trump.”
The insider further questioned if Underwood actually considered her American Idol role before agreeing to perform at the inauguration.
“The general opinion is that Carrie should have thought about the show’s culture,” they added. “And network values before jumping into such a major role while under contract.
