As she was set to perform “America the Beautiful,” Underwood’s music suddenly stopped, which led to a minute or two of silence inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Despite the moment, Underwood led the entire room in a capella version of the song.
“If you know the words, help me out here!” she declared before singing.
A source revealed that while the technical difficulties didn’t necessarily ruin the performance, the American Idol winner was not happy about the situation.
“Carrie was dissatisfied with her performance at the event,” the insider told Daily Mail. “Primarily due to the limited space she was given, which left her feeling cramped and uncomfortable.”
The source further pointed out that Underwood’s anxiety was high throughout the entire event. This made he feel as though she was not afforded the same level of respect or admiration as previous inaugurated performers, like Beyonce and Lady Gaga.
“She felt as if she was ushered in and out and had a mini hissy fit afterwards,” the insider also stated, noting that the country star is used to performing in massive venures on a stage. “She was not given a stage or a platform even.”
The source then said that Carrie Underwood felt like she was literally just in a room with people all around her with a microphone. They noted the acoustics were thrown off.
Another Source Spoke Out About Carrie Underwood’s Reaction to the Inauguration Performance
Meanwhile, another source told the Daily Mail that Carrie Underwood’s reaction to the inauguration performance was not ideal or expected.
“Though her performance wasn’t ideal, nor was it what she wanted it to be as she wanted it to go down without a hitch,” the insider said. “The fact that there was some awkwardness getting things going just added to the unique nature of it all.”
The source then said that Underwood would eventually laugh about the performance and take it for what it was.
“But she is disappointed that it wasn’t more of a moment,” they continued. “As the moment she was searching for got altered with the technical difficulties.”
The insider pointed out that Underwood was still “proud of herself” for “being able to save” the inauguration performance from being a “total disaster.”
“Though it isn’t her day, and she just wanted to add to the day and not upstage anything,” they noted. “She was annoyed of how it turned out.”
Following the performance, fans quickly came to Underwood’s defense and praised her.
“Alternatively, Carrie Underwood had one of the most amazing moments ever,” one fan wrote. “In the face of adversity, she decided to do the hymn a capella, and include everyone in the audience. It was beautiful to see. It was so powerful, a cappella as everyone joined it. Simply, wonderfully perfect.”
Underwood was previously criticized for agreeing to perform at the inauguration. She responded by stating she was honored to perform and be a small part of the historic event.
