ESPN revealed some devastating news on Sunday. Analyst Chris Mortensen passed away at the age of 72. Mortensen was a regular on flagship shows such as SportsCenter and NFL Live. Following his passing ESPN chairman referred to Mortensen as an “industry pioneer” in his statement.

“Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and universally beloved as a supportive, hard-working teammate,” Pitaro said in the statement.
“He covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and passion and was at the top of his field for decades. He will truly be missed by colleagues and fans, and our hearts and thoughts are with his loved ones.”
Peyton Manning Reacts to Chris Mortensen’s Death
Mortensen was a staple at ESPN. He joined the media giant in 1991 and became a name that was synonymous with NFL coverage. Mortensen name became so synonymous with the NFL that throughout his tenure gained the respect of NFL legends. Former star quarterback Peyton Manning was among several to pour in with tributes.
“We lost a true legend,” Manning said in his post. “Mort was the best in the business and I cherished our friendship. I trusted him with my announcement to sign with the Broncos and with the news of my retirement. I will miss him dearly and my thoughts and prayers are with Micki & his family. Rest in peace, Mort.”
ESPN analyst Adam Schefter also chimed in saying that it was a “devastating day,” following his passing.
“An absolutely devastating day. Mort was one of the greatest reporters in sports history and an even better man,” Schefter said. “Sincerest condolences to his family, and all who knew and loved him. So many did. Mort was the very best. He will be forever missed and remembered.”

Mortensen was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2016. So last year he took time away from ESPN to focus on his health. Though he was a giant in the field of NFL coverage, Mortensen has gained the respect of his peers throughout the entire landscape of sports journalism.
ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski called him a “giant of a man and journalist.”
“An absolute giant of a man and journalist,” Wojnarowski said. “One of the great thrills coming to ESPN was getting to know and learn from Mort. Condolences to his family and friends and Godspeed to a legend.”
