While being NBC’s 2024 Olympic surfing correspondent, the SNL star has dealt with a series of bad luck during his time in Tahiti. He ended up sustaining a nasty injury during a run-in with a coal reef last week. This caused injuries in three toes. He then developed a staph infection followed by an ear infection.
While giving an update, Jost couldn’t help but crack a joke about being at the Olympic Games in the first place. “It’s a weird feeling when you’re in the medical tent way more than any of the athletes,” Colin Jost told NBC Olympic host, Maria Taylor, last week while chatting about his toe and other injuries. He then made the claim that ants have taken up some space on his injured foot and the wounds are now insect-infested.
He then told Mike Tirico, “My new goal is to have as many infections as there are Olympic events.”
Although the Olympic surfing events are still going on, Colin Jost admitted to defeat. He left Tahiti to handle his injuries. He was replaced by Luke Bradnam, a weatherman from Channel Nine in Australia.
However, that didn’t stop Colin Jost from joking about Olympic toe and other injuries. He declared in an Instagram post that he is alive “with journalism” despite “rumors” about his death.
“Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated,” he stated in an Instagram post. “Semis and finals of Olympic surfing happening right now in Tahiti. At the Wall of Skulls.”
Colin Jost Also Dealt With Chickens During His Olympic Commentaries
With the injuries he sustained, Colin Jost had run-ins with the local animals during his time as an Olympic commentator.
“I apologize that we were a little delayed getting to you,” Jost told Taylor at one point. “You’re not gonna believe it based on this yard full of chickens, but we had some technical difficulties.”
Despite the situation, Colin Jost stated the start of his Olympic experience was a “total joy.” Just before he headed to Tahiti, the comedian shared his excitement to be a commentator.
“I’m honored to get to watch the best surfers in the world compete on one of the heaviest waves imaginable,” he shared. “And to help showcase the rich history of surfing in Tahiti. And my Writer’s Guild health insurance is excited to see what the coral reef does to my back.”
