In the movie, Moore plays an aging actress who takes a magic “substance” that allows her to become younger. Many of her scenes, however, required her to be full-frontal.
Moore opened up about her role during the Cannes Film Festival press conference.
“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” she said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

Thankfully, Moore got to work alongside Margaret Qualley, who made her feel comfortable when doing her full-frontal scenes.
“We obviously were quite close — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said.
According to IMDb, The Substance is about “a fading celebrity [who] decides to use a black market drug, a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.”
Many viewers have shared their feedback on the film already.
“Contrasting opinions between male and female critics on THE SUBSTANCE are REALLY noticeable And already fascinating,” one person wrote on X. “Can’t wait to delve deeper into the discourse in the coming months. Undoubtedly set to be one of the most talked-about films of the year.”
“Cannes just got splattered. THE SUBSTANCE is the most batsh-tf–kinginsane movie of the last 20 years. It is on such a freakish level that it’s impossible to believe it exists. Demi Moore goes there and @coraliefargeat has carved a contemporary horror unlike anything you’ve seen,” another person wrote.
IndieWire also added, “‘The Substance’ will stop at nothing to explode the ruthless beauty standards that society has inflicted upon women for thousands of years.”
The Substance premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 19, where it competed for the Palme d’Or.
