According to TMZ, Efron’s terrifying water situation started when he dove into the swimming pool with friends on Saturday, Aug. 3. However, the dive was allegedly so deep that he hit the bottom of the pool and ingested water.
The actor reportedly ingested a large amount of water into his lungs when his chest hit the bottom of the pool. He then showed signs of distress and onsite security assisted him out of the water.
Insiders close to the swimming pool incident told TMZ that Zac Efron was “momentarily dazed” afterward. He was then taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure. While seeking medical attention, the High School Musical alum had chest X-rays done. Those confirmed that the water was gone from his lungs.
He was cleared for release hours later but remained in the hospital due to there being a large paparazzi group outside.
The next day, Efron took to Instagram to show a picture of himself working out with a thank you caption to those who were concerned.
The insiders shared that he went right back to his normal routine after leaving the hospital. He had dinner in Ibiza that evening and returned to the U.S. on Monday, Aug. 5.
Zac Efron Previously Hospitalized While Out of the Country
This, unfortunately, isn’t the first time that Zac Efron has been hospitalized while away from home.
In 2019, the actor became ill while he was filming in Papua, New Guinea. He was even airlifted to a hospital in Australia. According to various reports, Efron allegedly contracted typhoid or other bacterial infection while visiting New Guinea. At the time, the Center for Disease Control reported that typhoid can be found in contaminated food or water in Papua New Guinea. The health organization advised those traveling to the country needed to have the vaccine.
However, Zac Efron seemingly bounced back after the medical event and resurfaced weeks later.
“Very thankful to everyone who has reached out. I did get sick in Papua New Guinea but I bounced back quick and finished an amazing 3 weeks in P.N.G.,” the actor shared in an Instagram post following the incident. He also shared a photo of him smiling with kids.
“I’m home for the holidays with my friends and family,” Efron continued in the post. “Thanks for all the love and concern, see you in 2020!”
