According to TMZ, the incident occurred while the TV personality was on a flight heading to Mexico on Friday, June 14. After a fellow passenger started going in and out of consciousness, Oz sprung into action to help.
Dr. Oz confirmed to the media outlet that there was a medical incident on board the flight from New York City to Cabo San Lucas. He shared he was flying to a wedding when he heard flight attendants asking for medical help.
“[A] middle-aged man lost consciousness and we did usual triage with physical exam and vital signs,” Oz explained. “After oxygen, OJ, and time, he recovered and needs to have a detailed evaluation with his local physician.”
Dr. Oz pointed out that the male passenger drank some juice after noticing that low blood sugar was the cause of the unexpected fainting. He then declared, “Oxygen is the best drug we ever use.”
Although Oz stated that the fellow passenger was doing better, eyewitnesses say the doctor gave the man his phone number in the event they had another medical emergency.
Dr. Oz Previously Saved a Fellow Passenger During a 2018 Flight
The situation isn’t the first time Dr. Oz used his expertise to help someone thousands of feet in the air.
In 2018, the TV personality saved a collapsed passenger while flying from New York City to Las Vegas.
“I was grabbed by a stewardess on the plane after a 30-year-old guy collapsed,” he told Page Six. “I got him to lie on his back and [put] his feet up on the emergency doors, and with that I began to get a reasonable pulse and blood pressure.”
When the incident occurred, Dr. Oz was flying to Las Vegas to attend the Consumer Electronics Show. He used electrode pads from the plane’s Automated External Defibrillator to create a makeshift EKG test.
“I couldn’t tell if he was having a heart attack or not,” Oz explained. “His blood pressure was really low but his heart rate was really high.”
Dr. Oz stated that after the plane landed, the passneger was rushed to a nearby emergency room. “I was worried about a clot going to his lungs which is common in airplanes,” he said. “While he was laying on the ground he started to shake and he went from being clammy to he had a temperature of 103 by the time he got to the ER.”
Oz added that he “stayed in touch” with the passenger following the incident. He later found out the passenger collapsed due to possibly the flu.
