While speaking to KROQ’s Audacy Check In earlier this week, Stefani spoke about why the No Doubt songs hit her in an unsettling way. “I can’t listen to a lot of the songs because they speak so clearly to me,” she explained.
“And it’s like, you know, you have regrets, you have mistakes you’ve made. And most of the songs are about that.”
One No Doubt song in particular really gets to Gwen Stefani. “If I do ‘Ex-Girlfriend,’ even when I say it, I almost throw up in my mouth,” she admitted. “Just knowing exactly where I was in that moment to write that song and what I know now? It’s just like, ‘Oh, my God.’ It just brings you right back.”
Although she didn’t reveal which “mistakes” she was talking about, Gwen Stefani is known for writing songs about her personal relationships.
For No Doubt’s hit track Don’t Speak, the song was able the break up between Stefani and No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal. The couple dated from 1987 to 1994.
Ex-Girlfriend, which was released in 2000, was about Stefani’s now ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale.
Gwen Stefani Is Going to Perform With Her No Doubt Bandmates At the 2024 Coachella Festival
While the songs hit her in an uncomfortable way, Gwen Stefani is preparing to reunite with her No Doubt bandmates for the 2024 Coachella Music Festival. The big event will take place the weekend of April 12.
Although she has those difficult feelings towards her older hit tracks, Stefani said being on stage and performing is entirely different for her.
“There’s lots of times you’ll be on tour and doing the repetitive songs but it’s not the songs, you’re with these new people every night and they’re receiving the songs,” she explained. “I can’t believe I was chosen to have this life because it’s such an incredible way to express yourself and to know yourself. And the songs do that.”
The 2024 Coachella Music Festival will be No Doubt’s first performance as a band in nearly a decade. Sources revealed that Stefani was a driving force in getting the reunion to happen. However bandmates Kanal, Tom Dumont, and Adrian Young hadn’t been into the idea. Now it appears they are happy to do the show.
“Once the Coachella team heard they had been talking and reached out with the offer, it really solidified the reunion,” a source explained to Us Weekly. “The whole group has some ideas for new material and are open to a tour directly after [their] performance.”
