Nevada Governor Declares State of Emergency As Davis Fire Causes Extensive Damage
Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency on Sunday, Sept. 8.
According to CNN, the wildfire, described as a “wind-driven blaze,” has already caused damage to 14 structures and burned 6,500 acres of land.
The wildfire also caused the evacuation of 14,000 people in the Washoe County area. More than 6,000 residents are without power.
Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue reported, “Heavy aerial resources and multiple agencies working to stop this wind-driven wildfire.”
“Gusty winds are forecasted throughout the week,” an update from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest stated. It was noted that customers currently without power should be prepared for prolonged outages. Those who still have power “should be prepared for potential additional de-energizations due to the dynamic nature of the fire.”
NV Energy further stated it cut power “to prevent further ignitions and protect first responders.”
The company also asked those who still have power and are near the fire to prepare for potential outages.“Power has been restored to 12,500 customers, but 6,300 remain without power tonight into September 9th,” it said on Sunday.
Along with the wildfire, excessive heat warnings and advisories are in effect in Southern California, the Desert Southwest, and the Northern Great Basin. The temperatures in Southern California range from 95 to 105 degrees. This is considered 10 to 20 degrees above average for the area.
The National Weather Service also issued an air quality alert. This is “due to heat wave and elevated fine particle pollution levels due to wildfire smoke.”
There are currently 14 active wildfires burning across California
