A new promotional video reveals the eagerly awaited date for the beloved summer TV event.
In the footage, John Cena approaches a whiteboard calendar for July and excitedly notices a blue shark doodle on the 7th. This discovery propels him to a dock teeming with cheerful beachgoers—including a friendly sea lion—who eagerly exchange high-fives and smiles with the beloved actor and wrestler.
As Cena reaches the end of the dock, he turns to the camera and declares, “I’ve been waiting for this all year.” He then unveils the big announcement: Shark Week 2024 will kick off on July 7 on Discovery, with John Cena as the host.
“Now, this is a holiday!” Cena exclaims as the sharks fly overhead.
John Cena shared the footage hyping up Shark Week on X (formerly Twitter). “Mark your calendars and get ready to dip your toes (or fins) in the water!”, he wrote alongside the footage. “#SharkWeek begins Sunday July 7th! @Discovery”, he added.
For over 35 years, Shark Week has thrilled audiences with close encounters with sharks and the experts who study and protect them. Of course, this year’s event promises to be just as exciting.
Shark Week 2024 presents Belly of the Beast Pt. 2, a deep dive into a great white shark-feeding frenzy. Highlights include Monster Hammerhead: Species X, exploring a potential new hammerhead species, and Great White Serial Killer: Sea of Blood, detailing a village grappling with a relentless great white shark.
John Cena More Than Has the Chops to Host Shark Week
Of course, before venturing into Hollywood, John Cena, a resident of Florida, achieved fame as a WWE superstar.
Like fellow wrestling icons Hulk Hogan and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, John Cena has seamlessly transitioned into the world of movies and television. Cena’s impressive film and TV credits include Fast and Furious 9, The Suicide Squad, Blockers, and Trainwreck.
Meanwhile, John Cena has showcased his hosting talents on various platforms, including Saturday Night Live, the ESPYs, the “Today” show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? and the 2017 and 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards.
However, there’s a lot for Cena to live up to. Last year’s Shark Week, hosted by Jason Momoa, achieved its highest premiere night ratings in three years. Fellow WWE alum Dwayne Johnson hosted the event in 2022.
