In a post on Facebook, the Newport Beach Fire Department revealed that the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Corona del Mar Main Beach.
Responding Newport Police Department officers arrived and were able to rescue the man from his fully submerged Jeep. There were “challenging conditions” due to the waves rolling the vehicle in the surf.
“Their quick actions ensured the safety of the patient, who was later transported to a local area hospital for evaluation and treatment,” the Newport Beach Fire Department revealed.
Multiple units from the fire department responded, providing medical care and scene support. Public Works personnel also worked to safely remove the vehicle from the surfline. The vehicle was then towed away from the beach.
“The teamwork and determination of all responders were critical in overcoming the hazards posed by the early morning surf,” the Newport Beach Fire Department said.
The Newport Beach Police Department is currently investigating why the vehicle ended up submerged on the California beach.
Driving is reportedly not permitted on the beach. According to the beach’s rules, vehicles are required to park in designated areas.
Days before the vehicle incident, the Newport Beach Lifeguards issued a beach hazard warning that was in effect until Dec. 15.
The lifeguards warned that there would be a minor tidal overflow.
“Low-lying locations, including parking lots, boardwalks, Newport Harbor islands may experience minor tidal overflow during astronomical high tides of around 6 to 7 feet,” the beach hazard statement warned. “Hazardous swimming conditions.”
Dec. 14’s tide details were 6.9 feet at 7:28 a.m.
Another Man Died on the Same California Beach This Past Summer
The submerged vehicle incident occurred just months after a man died by suicide on the same California beach.
According to the Newport Beach Police Department, the man’s body was found at Corona Del Mar Main Beach in the early hours of Aug. 17.
Law enforcement officials determined that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The firearm was located near the body.
“The decedent was a 64-year-old resident of Orange County,” the Newport Beach Police Department stated. “And was by himself.”
The officials further noted that it was an isolated incident. There was also no threat to the community. They did not reveal the full identity of the man.
