The band announced the guitarist’s passing in a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook on January 6. Lindgren, also known as Freddie Eugene, passed away under undisclosed circumstances.
“Warriors!!! Sadly, the news [has] reached us that Fredrik Lindgren, lead guitar of Unleashed 1989-1995, has passed away,” the band wrote alongside a snapshot of Lindgren thrashing on the guitar. “Fredrik was a huge part of the early history of the band. For this, we are eternally grateful. See you in Valhalla, brother!”
Fredrik Lindgren co-founded Unleashed in 1989 with Johnny Hedlund (vocals, bass) and Anders Schultz (drums). The original lineup also included Robert Sennebäck, who left the band the next year and was replaced by Tomas Måsgard on rhythm guitar.
Unleashed is widely regarded as one of the “Big 4” of Swedish death metal, standing alongside Entombed, Grave, and Dismember, according to Consequence.

Lindgren spent six years with Unleashed, contributing to the band’s first four albums: Where No Life Dwells (1991), Shadows in the Deep (1992), Across the Open Sea (1993), and Victory (1995). In 1995, he parted ways with the group. Fredrik Folkare took over as lead guitarist.
Lindgren shifted his attention to his new band, Terra Firma, a stoner metal group that remained active until 2003.
Fredrik Lindgren Shredded the Guitar in Several Other Swedish Bands
Meanwhile, beyond his work with Unleashed and Terra Firma, Lindgren showcased his talent as a guitarist in several Swedish bands, including Atlantic Tide, Loud Pipes, Celestial Pain, Born on Fire, and Harms Way.
Lord Chritus, also known as Christian Lindersson and a member of Lindgren’s Terra Firma band, honored the late guitarist with a tribute online.
“In loving memory of Freddie Eugene 1971-2025. Numbed by the news of your passing, Fredrik my old friend. Hard to put emotions into words,” Chritus penned alongside several snapshots of Lindgren. “Just hope you have found your peace as you deserve no less. You will not only be missed by me but many, I know this much. Thank you for being a part of my life. [You] colored it with your friendship and musicianship both embodied in what was Terra Firma. We had some really great times and that will never change. All my love.”
