Peter Jackson, the acclaimed director of the original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, along with his writing collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are on board as producers for the untitled movie project.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed during a recent earnings call that the trio would be closely involved in every aspect of the production, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful and revered franchises in history. [It] presents a significant opportunity for our theatrical business,” Zaslav added.
Over a year ago, the studio announced its plans to develop new LOTR movies. This was after securing a deal with the rights holders, Embracer Group AB, to create films inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic book series.
Meanwhile, Amazon is expanding the franchise with its own extensive TV universe, which could lead to competing franchises. Jackson and his co-writers also expressed frustration over the common misconception that they were involved in Amazon’s productions, despite not being so.
Before the New Films Drop, the Original ‘Lord of the Rings’ Films Are Coming Back to Theaters
Meanwhile, fans looking to feed their Middle Earth cravings until the new Lord of the Rings movies hit are in luck. The originals are coming back to theaters.
The original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, directed by Jackson, amassed nearly $3 billion globally. Meanwhile, Jackson’s subsequent trilogy, based on Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” achieved similar financial success.
Of course, Jackson’s original “LOTR” trilogy, featuring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, and Cate Blanchett, garnered critical acclaim. They secured 30 Academy Award nominations and won 17 Oscars. Among these, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) was awarded Best Picture.
Warner Bros. and Fathom Events are partnering to rerelease the fantasy blockbusters this summer. However, you might need a big gulp from the concession stand. The screenings will feature Jackson’s extended editions. These are also the same versions the filmmaker remastered in 2020 for a 4K Ultra HD re-release.
The films are set to be showcased over three days at participating Fathom Events locations. These include AMC, Cinemark, and Regal Cinemas.
The film series starts with The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) on June 8th. It continues with The Two Towers (2002) on June 9th. It finishes with The Return of the King (2003) on June 10th.
Tickets are now available for purchase on the Fathom Events website.
