While going up against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the St. Louis Blues forward was hit. There was only 2:37 remaining in the first period. A high-sticking penalty was called. However, it was later overturned when medical personnel tended to Holloway just before he was removed from the ice.
After he was off the ice, Dylan Holloway was rushed to a nearby St. Louis hospital. His parents, Bruce and Torrie, were also at the game and accompanied him to the hospital.
His teammate, Alexey Toropchenko, recalled the incident. “I was just sitting beside him and I saw something happening. He is our teammate and we worry about each other,” he said. “Especially when you’ve got moments like this, you worry even more.”
Later in the game, the team announced that Holloway was alert and stable. Afterward, coach Drew Bannister stated, “From what we heard, he’s doing well. He’s conscious and he’s doing well, so it’s a good sign.”
Holloway is currently in his first season with St. Louis. He spent the first two years of his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers.
Dylan Holloway Speaks Out Following Terrifying Injury on the Ice
While appearing at practice on Wednesday, Nov. 6, Dylan Holloway gave reporters an update about his recovery.
“I feel good today, feel way better,” Holloway stated, per ESPN. “As soon as I got hit, I knew something was a little off, but then I saw we got a two-on-one, so I couldn’t pass up that opportunity. But as soon as I got to the bench, I was feeling a little woozy, and then I didn’t really remember much from there until I was on the stretcher close to the ambulance.”
He also stated that he was more in shock as well as nausea and wasn’t sure what happened when he was hit with the puck. “They gave me a little medication, and once I kind of figured out what really went down, I started kind of calming down and feeling better.”
After being discharged from the hospital, Holloway stated he was told to abstain from physical activity for 24 hours. His coach, Drew Bannister told reporters there’s a chance he will return to the line during the team’s next game on Thursday, Nov. 7.
“I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves here,” Bannister shared. “We’re only less than 12 hours away from what that injury was, so we’ll kind of take it day to day with him and see how he’s doing tomorrow, but today is a good day for us.”
Holloway also spoke about his parent’s reaction to the injury. “It’s definitely tough knowing that they were watching that,” he said. “But, ultimately, having them there is way better. They’re staying with me, so I was able to talk with them last night, and it’s nice having some company around for sure.”
