“I woke up crying on the plane, and I don’t normally cry,” Mayers said of the incident.
Mayers also says that the turbulence seemed to be routine at first. But it didn’t take long for them to realize something was awry.
“We had had a bit of turbulence but that all stopped and I think they had served everyone breakfast, and I noticed one of the lockers had just come down,” she added.
“We hadn’t touched it, so that was strange, and then suddenly everything went ‘bang’ and everything just fell.”
She also notes that in the aftermath of everything passengers and even some crew members were left bloodied.
Couple Recalls ‘Traumatic’ Experience
“When they got us off the plane, there were a few of the staff who’d been injured — there’d been broken crockery — their faces were really covered in blood. It was awful,” she added.
Although the plane was able to safely land, there was one fatality during the incident. The passenger, a 73-year-old man, passed away during the incident. The presumed cause of his death is said to be a heart attack.
Ali Bukhari was on board with his wife after returning from their honeymoon. He notes that the experience was pretty animated, and the experience was “traumatic.”
“It was a very traumatic experience, it’s hard to describe in words — no one expects that really,” he said.
“A lot of people who were not wearing seatbelts were pushed up to the ceiling. Luckily we had our seatbelts on so we weren’t injured, and physically we are okay,” his wife Ramiza Bukhari added.
