“A death investigation that has tugged on the hearts of people across the nation has been ruled a suicide,” the sheriff’s office shared in a post on Facebook. “The decision was based on surveillance footage, interviews, physical evidence, and the examination of the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office.”
The sheriff’s office revealed that on Saturday, April 27, the Robeson County E911 Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a female.
During the phone call, the female allegedly asked the dispatcher if her phone could be located because she was going to kill herself. She wanted her family to be able to find her body.
“During the conversation with the dispatcher, the caller hung up the phone,” the sheriff’s office continued. “And the dispatcher was unable to contact the caller. The dispatcher was able to find the location of the caller and dispatched a Deputy to the location.”
The deputies contacted the Lumber River State Park superintendent upon their arrival at the park. Both deputies and state park rangers conducted a search of the area for the victim. They also used a Robeson County Sheriff’s Office drone.
“During the investigation, a black Honda Accord with a South Carolina registration was located in the parking lot at the State Park. The investigators confirmed that the vehicle belonged to Mica Miller, 30, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.”
The sheriff’s office further reported that investigators discovered a Sig Saucer gun case in the passenger seat of Mica’s vehicle. A receipt for the Sig Saucer handgun showed it was purchased from a pawn show. It was dated the same day of Mica’s death, April 27.
Authorities Discovered the Body of Mica Miller in Water
Investigators were also approached by a person who told them there was a bag near the water edge with identification belonging to Mica Miller. The person said while he was fishing nearby, he heard someone crying just seconds before a gunshot.
A body was discovered in the water after another person called E911 to share the information. The North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office arrived on the scene to identify the victim as Mica. A Sig Saur 9mm handgun was discovered in the water near her body. The serial number of the weapon matched the gun box found in Mica’s vehicle.
Mica’s phone and other personal belongings were located in the park as well. The sheriff’s office revealed that before her death, Mica had done a Google search for “national parks near me” and information about Lumber River State Park was provided.
The sheriff’s office also confirmed that Mica and her husband John-Paul Miller were separated at the time of her death. The couple was involved in the legal system. This information also led to investigators confirming the whereabouts of John-Paul and a female he was allegedly romantically involved with. Both he and the female were not in North Carolina on the night before and the day of Mica’s death.
Investigators further revealed they met with Mica’s parents and immediate family members. Although he was allowed to attend a separate meeting, John-Paul Miller indicated through his attorney that he would not come to North Carolina to talk to investigators.
