While promoting her new comedy The Prank, The View host Sunny Hostin asked Moreno how she approached the part. “I just thought, how am I going to play this terrible person? And I thought of all the women in my life — particularly in show business — who’d really been awful to me. All of these b—es. I said to myself, I thought, I’m going to use all of the things that they did with me and my little Puerto Rican past, and that’s what I do. Boy was that fun.”
Although Rita Moreno didn’t mention who were the “b—es,” The View cohosts were quick to get her to reveal. Ana Navarro even asked the 92-year-old actress to write down the names.
According to IMDb, The Prank follows Ben and his slacker friend, Tanner, as they play a prank on their high school physics professor. When she fails them on a test, they teach the instructor a lesson by falsely accusing her of murder. Starring in the film with Rita Moreno are Ben Palmer, Ramona Young, Keith David, and Kate Flannery.
‘The Prank’ Director Praises Rita Moreno For Her Talent and Energy
Last month, director Maureen Bharoocha and writers Rebecca Flinn-White and Zak White spoke to PEOPLE about Rita Moreno.
“I’m excited for fans to see this unexpected performance from Rita Moreno in this dark comedy,” Bharoocha explained. “The Prank is filled with thrills and laughs, but Rita’s deliciously devilish performance is not to be missed.”
The director then stated that Rita Moreno’s talent and energy is unparalleled. “And it’s an understatement to say working with the legendary EGOT winner was a dream come true.”
Moreno’s character in The Prank is described as “the hardest, coldest, strictest” faculty member. “She fails Ben’s entire class unless a student who cheated comes forward. When no one does, Tanner and Ben hatch a plan to ruin her life and frame her for murder on social media.”
The Prank made its debut in March 2022 at the Austin, Texas’ South by Southwest. It went on to score two awards at the 2023 California Women’s Film Festival.
Moreno previously starred in 80 For Brady, Fast X, and Family Switch. The Prank will hit select theaters on March 15.
