The Hollywood Reporter announced on Tuesday that the three-time Oscar nominee is eyeing a starring role in a standalone Star Wars film.
The film is set to be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy, who also recently wrapped the final season of Stranger Things. Levy has been developing his Star Wars project since at least 2022. He is co-writing the script with This is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project collaborator Jonathan Tropper.
Almost no details about the story, or where it fits in the Star Wars universe, have been made available. However, THR reports that it will not be connected to George Lucas’ original “Skywalker Saga.”
Ryan Gosling’s ‘Star Wars’ Project Will Be a Standalone Film in the Franchise
The Skywalker Saga concluded in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker, the ninth and final film of Lucas’ three original planned trilogies.
The franchise’s two standalone films — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story — came out in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Both were prequel stories to events in the Skywalker Saga. Rogue One told the story of how rebels stole the plans to the Death Star immediately prior to the events of 1977’s Star Wars. Solo detailed the early years of Han Solo’s “scruffy nerfherder” before he became a rebel himself.
Since then, all of the franchise’s live-action projects have been streaming series. The Mandalorian premiered in 2019 and has three seasons to date. Director Jon Favreau is currently in post-production on a spin-off film, The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Other live-action Star Wars series over the last five years have included The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte and The Skeleton Crew.
After his lauded starring turn in Barbie in 2023, Gosling appeared in the action rom-com The Fall Guy in 2024. He next stars in Lord & Miller’s sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary.
