Marcus “MJ” Daniels, Jr., a University of Southern Mississippi football player, has reportedly died following an apparent shooting.
In a statement by the Hattiesburg Police Department, the deadly incident occurred on Tuesday, June 11, at approximately 9:29 p.m. in the 6300 block of Hwy 49.
The authorities revealed that upon arrival they discovered a male victim, identified as 21-year-old Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr. of Lucedale, Missi., unresponsive in his vehicle with apparent gun wounds.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the Daniels family. We are doing all that we can to locate the perpetrators to bring justice to him and his family,” the police department stated. ““We are asking the community for their help and to come forward with any information pertaining to this tragic incident and the untimely death of Marcus Daniels.”
Hattiesburg Police Department further stated, “We are working closely with the university and local officials and will share as much information as possible without jeopardizing the investigation.”

University of Southern Mississippi Reacts to the Sudden Death of Marcus ‘MJ’ Daniels Jr.
Following the news that Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr. died, the University of Southern Mississippi released a statement about the football player’s death.
According to the University, Daniels played his first season with the Golden Eagles last fall after transferring from the University of Mississippi. During the season, he registered 29 tackles in 12 games played and tied for the team lead in interceptions with three.
“We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time,” the University stated. “Out of respect for the family and all impacted in this matter, the University and Athletic Department will have no further comment at this time.”
The University of Southern Mississippi also stated that its student counseling services is available to members of the Golden Eagle football program and individuals close to the university.
The Golden Eagles football team’s head coach, Will Hall, also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his condolences for the Daniels family.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of MJ Daniels,” he wrote.”His smile was infectious and lit up the room. Please keep MJ’s loved ones and our Southern Miss family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
