During a recent interview with 9 News, Swiftie Tamara Gray revealed she received a phone call for her life-changing surgery while she was en route to see Swift’s first Sydney show.
“I got a call from the hospital saying they had a kidney,” she explained. She revealed that she had been on a register for a kidney transplant but never expected a donation to become available while she was traveling to the Gold Coast Airport.
“I won’t lie, there was a split second that I considered saying no [to the kidney],” she continued. “But you know, I’m not crazy.”
The Taylor Swift fan further pointed out she has IgA nephropathy, also known as Berger disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease occurs when a germ-fighting protein called immunoglobulin A (IgA) builds up in the kidneys. It can cause inflammation that, over time, can make it more difficult for the kidneys to filter waste from blood.
Gray noted the timing was somewhat of a miracle for her. “Obviously it was meant to be,” she declared. “Because if I was on that flight, basically I would’ve missed the call and there’s only 30 minutes to answer otherwise they move on to the next recipient. I spend 15 hours a week predominantly on dialysis every week.”
Although her friends decided to attend the show while she stayed back, Gray added there isn’t any drama. “Now that I can travel after I’ve had a transplant, my friend said, ‘well we’ll just go see her in Europe or something.’”
