During the ceremony, Jason reflected on his years playing football as well as his family life. It was a big moment for the brothers, ending one of the NFL’s most famous siblings since the Mannings.
“So, this all brings us here to today. Where I announce that I am retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles,” Jason said. “And today I must admit, I am officially overrated. Vastly overrated. It took a lot of hard work and determination getting here. I have been the underdog my entire career, and I mean this when I say it, I wish I still was. Few things give me such joy as proving someone wrong.”
Prior to the ceremony, Travis opened up about his brother’s retirement. He said the retirement sent a rumble through sports.
“I think everybody in the football world felt this one. Clearly a lot of emotion at the end of this game for you guys, but I can attest for it because I was feeling it. I know Kylie, mom, dad, everybody that was at the game was feeling it. And I know all the friends and family that I got texts from … they were all feeling it, man,” he told Us Weekly.
“It’s been cool to see everyone appreciate who he’s been over the years this past week,” Travis said. “I think the big guy’s still got some football left if he wants it.”
Travis Kelce Gets Emotional
Travis was in front of the audience for his brother’s retirement. He sat alongside his parents and Jason’s wife Kylie. Taylor Swift did not attend the event in case you were wondering.
Jason explained how his relationship to his brother played a pivotal role in his career in the NFL.
“We have a small family. No cousins, one aunt, one uncle. It was really my brother and I our whole lives,” Jason explained. “We did almost everything together — competed, fought, laughed, cried and learned from each other.”
“And my brother receiving the call and him being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs,” Jason said. “This time, the tears down both my father and I’s face as my brother realized his own [dream].”
Travis hasn’t announced his own retirement. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end just won back to back Super Bowls and is riding a career high.
